Figuring out what to do after you’ve been in an automobile accident can be an emotional and stressful process. Below are some steps to guide you through the process.

Report your claim:

After the accident, it is very important to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the claim. The Insurance Companies have a dedicated Claims Department to help expedite this claims process. They will take down the initial claims report and instruct you on the next steps. The insurance company information is on your Auto Insurance ID Card. The company information will include the phone number to contact in the event of a claim, the name of your insurance company and your policy number.

If you need additional policy information, login to your client portal. This client portal offers online account access to your policy information, ID cards, and change requests from a browser: https://portal.csr24.com/mvc/5244900 (1st time users will have to click “create account”, your email address, phone number and policy number will be needed. Step by step list on what to do when involved in an accident:

At the scene of the accident:

Check to see if anyone is hurt
Call 911 to request medical assistance if needed
Move your vehicle to a safe location but do not leave the scene.
Do not admit fault or reveal your policy limits
Contact the police. Often times if the car is drivable, they may not go to the scene but ask you to go to the police station to file the police report.
Exchange Information with all of those involved.

Information that should be collected from those involved:

Names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email address of the other drivers, all vehicle occupants and witnesses. Take a photo of their drivers license if possible.
Take a photo or write down the license plate number of each vehicle involved.
Location of the incident
Date, time and weather conditions at time of incident
Photos at the scene of the accident of the damage to the vehicles and/or property.
Insurance information from all others involved in the incident including the Insurance company name, policy number and phone number. Take a photo of their ID card if possible

Once Police report is recorded, make note of:

The police report number
Phone number
Officers name and badge number
Tickets issued to whom and for what
